About This Quote
The following quote is from the movie "Scent of a Woman". The movie portrays the character of Sergeant Albie Sachs (Al Pacino) who is a veteran of World War II. He is described as having a very strong and deep passion for his job and his beliefs. His character is also described as stubborn and often times does things that others may consider to be wrong.
This quote is introduced to us by one of his comrades, Private Ithilnin (Chris Sarandon). Ithilnin was not able to serve in the war because he was too young at the time. Because of this, he was still only 17 years old when the war ended.
Because Ithilnin was so young, Albie saw that he did not have many options for life after the war. Albie knew that if Ithilnin did not choose to live his life by following his heart he would have nothing out of the experiences he had gone through during the war. He knew that Ithilnin would have no more chances to feel alive.
Therefore, Albie decided to give him one final chance before sending him back home to become a civilian again. He told Ithilnin that he would be returning home shortly but wanted to give him one last gift before saying goodbye forever. He gave him a gold watch that was given to him by friends on his death bed, telling him that it was their way of telling him how much they loved him, even though they did not know him personally.
He told Ithilnin there was time on the watch for him to tell them how much they meant to him. When Albie left, the watch began moving by itself, displaying the portrait of an unknown woman who seems very familiar to Ithilnin, showing us what life could be like if we all follow our hearts instead of doing what society tells us is right or wrong.
